Communications Director

The Communications Director in the Office of Delaware Governor Matt Meyer develops and executes the Governor’s communications plan, manages press requests, and supervises Communications staffers.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the Governor’s communications and media point-of-contact
  • Develops and executes a comprehensive communications plan to find strategic opportunities for the Governor to amplify priorities, messaging, and the Administration’s agenda
  • Answers press inquiries, facilitates interviews, and connects reporters to the best contact within the Administration
  • Manages and builds media relationships
  • Identifies international, national, state, and local press opportunities
  • Coordinates and communicates with members of the press
  • Prepares written materials, including but not limited to press releases, media and flag advisories, memos, briefing materials, talking points, remarks, quotes, and speeches
  • Plans, organizes, manages, and oversees press events
  • Oversees digital and social media accounts
  • Assists the Governor in preparing for media appearances and speaking engagements
  • Manages and supervises communications and digital staff in the Governor’s Office
  • Staffs the Governor at various meetings and events, including but not limited to media events and press avails in and out of state 
  • Works with state agencies to coordinate communications
  • Researches and prepares memos, briefings, and other materials as needed or requested and submits them in a timely manner
  • Willingness and ability to work late evenings and weekends, as needed
  • Attends cabinet meetings, team leader meetings, and other meetings as needed or requested
  • Reports to the Chief of Staff
  • Office locations are Wilmington, Delaware, and Dover, Delaware

Preferred qualifications

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience working in a communications environment
  • Excellent communications skills
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Experience creating and executing a comprehensive communications plan
  • Experience building and maintaining strong relationships with members of the media
  • Highly organized individual with the ability to manage and execute several projects simultaneously and meet deadlines
  • Ability to travel and work nights and weekends
  • Must work well with others
  • Creativity a plus
