As a member of the Democratic Party, she served in the Delaware House of Representatives from 2002-2008 and in the Delaware Senate from 2008-2017. The other constitutional duty of the Lieutenant Governor is to serve on the Board of Pardons with the Chancellor, Secretary of State, State Treasurer, and Auditor of Accounts.

The Department of Services for Children, Youth and Their Families (also known as the Delaware Children’s Department) primary responsibility is to provide and manage a range of services for children who have experienced abandonment, abuse, adjudication, mental illness, neglect or substance abuse. Its services include prevention, early intervention, assessment, treatment, permanency and after care.
The Department is comprised of four divisions: Division of Prevention and Behavioral Health Services (DPBHS), Division of Family Services (DFS), Division of Youth Rehabilitative Services (DYRS), and Division of Management Support Services (DMSS).
