August 21, 2009 Governor Markell Joins Kickoff Event for Future Home OwnersHabitat For Humanity Helps Delawareans Realize Dream Wilmington – Today, Governor Jack Markell, along with Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County, joined with four Delaware families as they celebrated the dream of owning their own homes. The event occurred at the Habitat for Humanity – Gardner Way II / E. 13th Street Kickoff. “It’s so critical, especially during these economic times, that we all lend an extra hand to our neighbors,” said Governor Markell. “Habitat for Humanity volunteers do more than that – they lend a hand, a hammer and whatever it takes to get the job done. It is so meaningful to celebrate with these families, the dream of owning their own home.” Each of the four families walked unique paths as they came to partner with Habitat for Humanity. They spoke of their struggles to obtain homeownership, and of looking forward to encouraging others to never give up on their dreams. As one person shared, “Through commitment and hard work, we will be successful.” The Mission of Habitat for Humanity is to build affordable housing at no-profit, through a combination of volunteer labor, 'sweat-equity' and no-interest mortgages. They work in partnership with the community, stretching across economic and racial lines to bring people together to help others. Habitat for Humanity is committed to developing and empowering the community through the construction of simple, respectable homes. Upon its completion this fall, Gardner Way will bring the total number of Habitat homes in this community to more than 60. |
