Markell Expands Efforts to Promote Equality in Delaware

DOVER – Re-affirming his administration’s commitment to equality, Gov. Jack Markell signed Executive Order Eight on Tuesday. The measure expands anti-discrimination practices in state government and re-authorizes the Governor’s Council on Equal Employment Opportunity.

“Discrimination in any form is wrong and I will not stand for it as Governor,” Markell said. “I am proud to issue this executive order. It sends a clear signal that Delaware’s state government does not tolerate discrimination and is serious about fostering an inclusive working environment. Delaware’s state government must reflect the rich diversity of the citizens it serves.”

The executive order extends anti-discrimination safeguards for state employees and applicants for state jobs to protect all military veterans (previous orders only covered Vietnam War veterans) and to protect against discrimination based on gender identity.

“We owe the men and women who risked their lives to protect our freedom and unending debt of gratitude,” Markell said. “Protecting veterans against discrimination in state government is the least we can do.”

In re-authorizing the Governor’s Council on Equal Employment Opportunity, Markell added a new task to the panel’s charge. Instead of just reviewing the executive branch’s efforts to achieve a diverse workforce, Council members will now also make recommendations on how the executive branch can improve relations among current employees by fostering “an environment of inclusion.”

Markell also announced Tuesday that James Collins, Director of the Division of Professional Regulation, will be the council’s new Chairperson.
