White House Director of Auto Recovery and Team to Visit Delaware Thursday; Governor, Congressional Delegation Reps to Make Case for Aid for GM Workers

WILMINGTON – Delaware leaders will make the case for federal assistance for its unemployed autoworkers this Thursday to President Obama’s Director of Recovery for Auto Communities  and Workers, Dr. Edward Montgomery and his team. General Motors announced last week that it will be closing its Boxwood Road factory in Delaware, putting hundreds of Delawareans out of work just six months after the Chrysler plant in Newark shut down as well.

“We asked for the opportunity to be heard and the chance to make the case that, with retraining, our auto workers should be an important part of our efforts to get our state’s economy moving in the right direction,” Governor Jack Markell said. “We asked for Dr. Montgomery to come to Delaware to learn more about how the crisis at GM affected our workers and our communities. The Obama administration answered.”

Markell will be joined by representatives from the offices of each of Delaware’s Congressional Delegation – Senator Tom Carper, Senator Ted Kaufman and Congressman Mike Castle – and the state’s Stimulus Czar, Lt. Governor Matt Denn.

“We are pleased that Dr. Montgomery has responded to our requests to visit Delaware and discuss the ways in which the Obama-Biden Administration can be helpful to the many workers and their families affected by the loss of our two assembly plants,” the delegation said in a joint statement. “We will continue to work with the Governor in an effort to secure whatever federal resources are available.”
