Governor Markell Begins Term Facing Historic Unemployment

Total number highest in history; Percentage highest since 1984

WILMINGTON -- Governor Jack Markell issued the following statement Friday in response to the unemployment data released by the state Department of Labor:

“We know that Delaware faces historic challenges, but today’s news is a sobering reminder of just how much we have to do to get our state’s economy moving again,” Gov. Markell said. “The only antidotes to our economic woes are jobs, jobs and more jobs. No one will work harder than my administration to create quality jobs in Delaware.”

The data shows that Delaware’s unemployment rate rose to 6.2 percent in December. The total number of unemployed Delawareans who are actively seeking work climbed to 27, 665. These numbers are expected to grow in coming months as individuals laid off at the end of 2008 begin to collect unemployment benefits.
