Coast Guard Silver Lifesaving Medal Ceremony

This event is open to the press.

What: Governor John Carney will deliver remarks at the Coast Guard Silver Lifesaving Medal Ceremony, which will be posthumously awarded to the family of Michael Manley. Mr. Manley passed away tragically while rescuing his stepson, who was caught in a rip current, during a trip to Virginia Beach in 2015. The Silver Lifesaving Medal is the Coast Guard’s second highest award and is unique as it can be awarded to both civilian and military members. Only around 1900 Silver Lifesaving medals have been awarded since its creation in 1874, and it is one of the only military awards that is made of precious medal.

Recognizing Great Outdoors Month

This event is open to the press.

What: Governor John Carney will present a proclamation, recognizing the month of June as Great Outdoors Month at the ‘Governor’s Campout’ event at Trap Pond State Park. The goal of the ‘Governor’s Campout’ is to safely introduce families to outdoor adventures and camping, showcase healthy outdoor fun activities, and build further relationships with the surrounding communities to continue engagement with parks while inspiring the next generation of park enthusiasts.

Wilmington Aquatic Center Renamed in Honor of Former Vice President Joe Biden

What: Governor John Carney will attend a dedication ceremony in honor of former Vice President, Joe Biden. The Brown, Burton, Winchester Park aquatic center in Wilmington, which former Vice President Joe Biden worked at as a lifeguard for much of his young adult life, will be renamed in his honor.

What: Governor John Carney will deliver remarks at the Spring 2017 ITWorks Graduation ceremony in Wilmington. ITWorks is an award winning 16-week job training program that offers free, immersive IT training to young adults who have not yet completed a Bachelor’s degree. Students earn a professional certification in IT and a real-world internship inside leading corporations and nonprofits. Graduates gain a marketable skill set, improved confidence, leadership abilities, and a broad understanding of the nonprofit community and its interactions.
